Staff Associate Officer of Research (Computational Biology & Bioinformatics)
Job Description
The Genomics Information Systems Laboratory of Prof. Dimitris Anastassiou at Columbia University in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Systems Biology invites applications for one or more Staff Associate or Senior Staff Associate Officers of Research in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. These positions offer highly competitive salaries and the opportunity to work at the forefront of AI-driven biomedical discovery.
Candidates should have a degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related field (preferably an M.S. for Staff Associate and a Ph.D. for Senior Staff Associate), with demonstrated research experience and publications in computational systems biology, bioinformatics, or machine learning for biomedical applications.
The research will focus on developing and applying advanced computational and AI-driven methods to analyze large-scale, multimodal biological and clinical data. Core areas of interest include:
AI for multi-omics integration: Integrative analysis of single-cell and bulk RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and epigenomics to uncover regulatory programs and disease mechanisms.Virtual cell and digital twin modeling: Building AI-driven “virtual cells” that integrate multi-omic, spatial, and temporal data to simulate cellular states, perturbations, and responses to drugs or environmental changes.AI for real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE): Leveraging clinical registry, multi-omics, imaging, and longitudinal patient data to model disease trajectories, treatment effectiveness, and population heterogeneity, bridging molecular insights with clinical outcomes.Biomarker discovery and validation: Identifying diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers from multi-omics and clinical datasets using machine learning and statistical modeling, with an emphasis on robustness, reproducibility, and clinical translatability.Therapeutic target discovery: Using integrative and AI-driven approaches to identify and prioritize novel drug targets, including network-based methods, perturbation modeling, and integration of genetic and functional genomics data.
