Position Purpose

The Department of Genome Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 (RSE3), Bioinformatics Analyst. The position will play an important role in the development and deployment of research-related, computational tools used in the analysis of bacterial genomes, and the biological interpretation, contextualization and reporting of results generated by these pipelines. This position requires the ability to dissect and analyze complex research problems using a multitude of computational approaches that interact with our existing analysis pipelines. Skills and knowledge needed for this position include scripting and computer programming, bacterial genomics, and evolutionary biology and/or population genetics.

Responsibilities

Dissect and analyze complex research problems using a multitude of computational approaches (30%)

Develop and deploy research-related new bioinformatic pipelines for the processing, quality control, analysis and visualization of high throughput genomic data used in the analysis of bacterial genomes (30%)

Responsible for general troubleshooting alongside other researchers to solve new data analysis problems that emerge in the course of lab projects (10%)

Collaborate on the preparation and presentation of data for publications in peer-reviewed journals and other written material, ensuring clarity and adherence to publication standards (10%)

Serve as a technical expert in bioinformatics and genomics and support other lab members and collaborators in their associated projects, presenting analysis findings at group meetings and national conferences, as necessary. (10%)

Provide guidance and training to junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. (5%)

Confirm computational results with experimental assays, as necessary (5%)

Required qualifications

Bachelors Degree in bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics, or related field

4 years of research experience in bioinformatics, biology or related field to include:

Significant experience with bacterial genetics as evidenced by publication record

Knowledge of evolutionary biology and/or population genetics.

Demonstrated ability with Python, and ability to learn new languages and programming paradigms

Demonstrated ability to develop new code and analyses in the context of a research project

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Desired

PhD in bioinformatics, biology, genetics, or related field and relevant postdoctoral research experience

Familiarity with algorithms for analyzing high-throughput DNA sequencing data

Familiarity with versioning tools such as GitHub

Experience with management of high-throughput data

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent, goal-driven work

Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment

Outstanding written and communication skills

Ability to interact with faculty, staff and students at all levels
