Scientist 3 Translational Medicine (Cardiovascular and Metabolism)
Job Description
We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.
Genentech's Translational Medicine OMNI (TM OMNI) Department supports the entire R&D portfolio of novel therapies in Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases (OMNI). We develop and implement biomarker strategies to study disease pathways, confirm a therapeutic's mechanism of action, and improve clinical trial efficiency and success. Biomarker scientists within our department are responsible for conducting biomarker discovery, developing biomarker strategies, designing and implementing biomarker assays, and interpreting biomarker results. Additionally, we conduct foundational clinical translational research to study the molecular and cellular pathways driving disease to generate novel target and biomarker approaches.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Scientist 3 to join Genentech’s Translational Medicine (TM) team on-site at our South San Francisco campus. The candidate will collaborate with scientists across R&D to provide biomarker support for cardiovascular and metabolism (CVM) programs across different stages of drug development while also generating insights for the next generation of CVM drug targets. This role lies at the intersection of data science and the wet lab—applying computational skills to interpret -Omics datasets while simultaneously developing assays and experiments to execute on data-driven insights. This is a hands-on, high-impact position designed for a scientist who is eager to apply their scientific training to the complexities of drug development in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment.
As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will:
Analyze -Omics datasets (e.g. proteomics, metabolomics) generated from clinical and preclinical samples to discover candidate biomarkers and targets.
Develop, qualify, and validate custom assays (e.g., ELISA, Simoa, NULISA) against biomarkers of interest to support pipeline programs (goes beyond running commercial assay kits).
Perform experiments with disease-relevantin vitrohuman cell models.
Conduct or coordinate exploratory human studies to develop and validate biomarkers with internal and external collaborators.
Clearly and concisely communicate findings internally and externally through written reports, publications, and presentations.
Collaborating closely with internal partners, including Drug Discovery, Research Biology, Bioanalytical Sciences, Biochemical and Cellular Pharmacology, Tissue Genomics and Proteomics, Biostatistics, Computational Sciences, and Clinical Pharmacology.
Who You Are:
The ideal candidate will have:
A PhD in Biological Sciences with both bioinformatics and wet lab experience demonstrated in scientific publications. Clinical-translational experience is desirable.
Experience in, and deep technical understanding of, preclinical and clinical sample collection/pro‐ cessing and cellular/molecular lab techniques such as cell culture, primary cell isolation from tissues, immunostaining, molecular biology, ELISA, western blot, flow cytometry, genomic sequencing, qRT-PCR, and/or transcriptomics is required.
Proficient in programming (using R or Python) to apply biostatistical and bioinformatics methods to both pre-clinical and clinical data sets.
Must demonstrate independence with ability to develop hypotheses, design experiments/studies, develop analysis plans, interpret and present results.
Excellent teamwork, communication, time management, organization skills, and ability to work independently.
Excellent oral and written presentation skills, creative problem-solving abilities, and a passion for drug discovery and development.
Relocation benefits are not available for this posting.
