The Role

As Director of Bioinformatics you will own all bioinformatics and software at GTM. You’ll lead a small, technically excellent team and you’ll be the bridge between our R&D scientists, our wet lab, our operations team, our sales organization, and the CLIA-grade clinical world we’re stepping into in 2026.

Some of the projects you’ll lead:

  • Whole Virome sequencing — Take our analytical pipeline platform to production with benchmarking and synthetic-data tooling that standardizes how we evaluate every future tool.
  • CLIA-grade clinical readiness — using our patented multiplex oncology panels
  • Production-grade infrastructure — CI/CD, testing, monitoring, versioning
  • AI/ML as a core capability — including our first production ML pilot
  • NGS pipeline expansion — extend our NGS offerings to additional pathogens using our unique chemistry
  • Cross-functional leadership — partner to R&D, operations, sales, and the C-suite

Requirements

  • PhD or MS plus 10+ years of equivalent experience in a quantitative field (computational biology, bioinformatics, data science, biomedical engineering, or related)
  • This is a hands-on role — you will continue to contribute technically while leading the team. You will need a proven track record leading bioinformatics and data science teams in biotech, pharma, or diagnostics, including team management and stakeholder engagement at the C-suite/Board level.
  • Extensive expertise in algorithmic approaches for genomic data analysis including NGS (DNAseq, RNAseq, WGS/WES, scRNAseq, spatial transcriptomics), variant detection, and tools/databases such as Seurat, BAM/VCF, and AlphaFold
  • Proven experience designing, training, and deploying ML or AI models to production — not just exploratory notebooks. Includes model selection, evaluation, validation, deployment, and ongoing performance monitoring. Strong preference for ML applied to genomic, biomedical, or scientific data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and R, including ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) for bioinformatics applications, ETL/ELT workflows, and best practices for high-throughput data in regulated settings
  • Strong experience with Linux/Unix, cloud infrastructure (AWS services such as S3, EC2, Lambda, Redshift), and big data tools (Apache Spark, Snowflake, Databricks)
  • Solid grasp of statistical principles, machine learning methods (classification, regression, deep learning), and best practices for high-throughput data in regulated settings
  • Demonstrated ability to build, scale, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines using workflow managers such as Snakemake or Nextflow
  • Track record of translating early-stage research workflows into production-grade, maintainable systems
  • Excellent communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration, with a history of mentoring and leading projects to completion

Scientist II, Research & Development

GT Molecular is seeking a creative, hands-on Scientist II to join our Research & Development team.

We’re looking for a scientist who loves tinkering, prototyping, and learning new techniques. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working across a variety of projects, tackling ambiguous problems, and developing practical solutions where no established playbook exists.

The successful candidate will support a broad portfolio of R&D activities spanning molecular biology, genomics, assay development, and product development. They will independently design and execute experiments, develop and optimize new methods, and generate data that drive technical and product decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, analyze, and troubleshoot complex experiments in molecular biology and genomics, where no starting protocols may exist.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate assays, workflows, and laboratory methods for NGS, dPCR, qPCR, and nucleic acid extraction
  • Apply Design of Experiments (DOE) principles to efficiently optimize assays and workflows.
  • Develop orthogonal assays and validation strategies to rapidly evaluate performance and guide development decisions.
  • Analyze and communicate experimental results, recommendations, and next steps.
  • Contribute to intellectual property, technical documentation, and product development activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance R&D and product development goals.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior team members.

Qualifications

  • PhD with 2-4 years, Master’s with 4-6 years, or Bachelor’s with 6-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience in common molecular biology techniques
  • Experience with NGS workflows, their enzymes, and library preparation is a must-have
  • Experience using DOE and statistical approaches to guide experimental design
