Job Description

The Position

We are seeking an experienced and scientifically driven computational biologist to help advance our mission of discovering and developing novel therapies for patients with cardio-renal-metabolic (CRM) diseases. This is an opportunity to shape the next generation of CRM medicines by working at the forefront of computational biology, human disease understanding, and translational science. We welcome candidates who combine scientific depth, strategic thinking, and a collaborative mindset to turn complex data into meaningful therapeutic impact.

As a Principal Scientist in the CRM Computational Biology team, you will play a key role in translating complex human biological and clinical data into actionable insights that shape target discovery, biomarker strategies, patient stratification, and translational research.

Embedded in Boehringer Ingelheim's growing Computational Innovation department (@computationalinnovation), you will work at the interface of human biology, data science, and therapeutic innovation. In close partnership with scientists across the CRM Therapeutic Area and other key functions, you will provide computational leadership that enables data-driven decisions across the drug discovery and early development pipeline.

This position has a hybrid setup with approximately 2-3 days per week on site.

This position is part time eligible with 80 %.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role, you will design, establish, and apply state-of-the-art computational approaches to analyze and integrate diverse data modalities, including multi-omics, spatial transcriptomics, imaging, clinical, and real-world data.
  • You will lead and contribute to discovery and translational projects focused on disease understanding, target identification and validation, biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and human biology-driven therapeutic hypotheses.
  • Furthermore, you will serve as a scientific interface between Computational Innovation, CRM Therapeutic Area teams, Experimental Medicine, and other partnering functions to ensure computational insights are translated into impactful project decisions.
  • You will provide scientific leadership for computational workstreams, including defining analytical strategies, prioritizing data sources, interpreting results, and guiding project teams toward biologically and therapeutically meaningful conclusions.
  • Moreover, you will present analytical strategies, results, and recommendations clearly and persuasively to project teams, senior stakeholders, and scientific communities across the organization.
  • In addition, you will develop innovative computational methods, analytical frameworks, and reusable workflows that strengthen data-driven drug discovery and create a broader impact across the organization.

Requirements

  • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology or a related discipline, with several years of postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience applying computational biology in drug discovery or translational research, ideally within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Strong expertise in computational analysis of complex biological data, with relevant experience in areas such as multi-omics integration, spatial transcriptomics, biomarker discovery, patient stratification, disease biology, or target identification
  • Proficiency in R or Python, together with practical experience in reproducible research practices, version control systems such as GitHub or Bitbucket, scalable analytical pipelines, and FAIR data principles
  • Domain knowledge of cardio-renal-metabolic diseases is considered an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of effective collaboration in multidisciplinary project teams
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken

As part of our commitment to transparency and fairness, salary information will be shared during the recruitment process. We also offer a comprehensive benefits and wellbeing package.
