Job Description

The Position

Biostatistics and Data Sciences (BDS) is a global organization within the Human Pharma Business Unit. By working in close collaboration with other functions at Boehringer Ingelheim and external vendors, we integrate methodological and technical data science skills with business and scientific expertise. Together, we drive smart, timely, and confident decision-making from Proof of Concept (PoC) to approval and access.

As we transform BDS into a modern data science organization in clinical development, we are building a learning organization in which people develop and deploy leading-edge data science approaches and technologies. This includes the responsible use of AI-enabled solutions and automation to continuously improve how we plan, generate, analyze, and evaluate evidence across the Human Pharma value chain. The Senior Clinical Data Scientist supports late phase clinical drug development by providing strategic planning and execution, data transformation as well as all aspects of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics of data.

This position can either be filled in Ingelheim or Biberach.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • You independently plan, conduct, and coordinate statistical programming activities for assigned clinical trials and projects, including data transformation, statistical analyses, and the delivery of high-quality reports and outputs.
  • In addition, you design, program, validate, and maintain CDISC-compliant datasets and associated deliverables, supporting the delivery of complete, consistent, and submission-ready data for assigned studies and stakeholder needs.
  • Moreover, you will coordinate and oversee CROs and external partner contributions, ensuring quality, progress, and risk mitigation.
  • The duties will also include the collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to translate scientific and business needs into data-driven solutions.
  • Furthermore, you’ll drive innovation through AI, automation, R, and advanced statistical methods to improve efficiency and scalability.
  • Finally, you will generate actionable insights from clinical data through visualization and contribute to evidence-based decision-making across the value chain.
  • You coordinate dependencies, priorities, risks, and timelines across assigned studies and projects, ensuring transparent communication, effective collaboration with multidisciplinary experts, and reliable delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Master of Science (MSc) in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field (Psychology, Data Science, Finance, etc).
  • Several years of data science experience in pharmaceutical development and statistical programming for clinical trials, particularly with SAS and R (working experience might be partially compensated by broad and deep topic-specific knowledge).
  • Sound knowledge of CDISC standards, statistical methodology, clinical trial design, medical terminology, and clinical trial data processing.
  • Practical understanding of AI-enabled solutions and automation, including responsible, compliant, and value-adding use in clinical data science.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple activities, interfaces, dependencies, priorities, and timelines in a global, cross-functional environment.
  • Experience in vendor governance and CRO oversight, including expectation setting, performance monitoring, quality review, issue management, escalation, and pragmatic problem-solving.
  • Strong English communication and interpersonal skills, a collaborative and agile mindset, and the ability to explain complex data science concepts clearly; experience with agile teams or as a product owner is an advantage.
