Job Description

Description

The Department of Computational Innovation (CI) at Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join the CI Inflammation team. In this role, the successful candidate will partner with CI Leads and cross-functional project teams to advance the Boerhinger’s Immunology & Respiratory (I&R) drug portfolio from Pre-LO through Candidate Selection. The position will generate timely, decision-enabling computational evidence to strengthen understanding of disease biology, target rationale, novel therapeutic concepts (NTCs), mechanisms of action, and patient stratification strategies.

The successful candidate will work as a key contributor within interdisciplinary project teams, partnering closely with CI Leads to execute bioinformatics analyses, interpret results, and assemble fit-for-purpose evidence packages for I&R project milestones. The role will apply advanced omics, computational biology, and data-science approaches while supporting scientific integration and decision-making.

As an employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, you will actively contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of our products to our patients and customers. Our global presence provides opportunity for all employees to collaborate internationally, offering visibility and opportunity to directly contribute to the companies' success. We realize that our strength and competitive advantage lie with our people. We support our employees in a number of ways to foster a healthy working environment, meaningful work, mobility, networking and work-life balance. Our competitive compensation and benefit programs reflect Boehringer Ingelheim's high regard for our employees.

  • In Silico Evidence Generation: Generate, integrate, and document robust in silico evidence addressing disease biology, target rationale, NTC MoA, translational relevance, patient segmentation, biomarkers, and differentiation from competing approaches.
  • Computational Analysis: Apply advanced computational methods, including multi-omics and AI/ML approaches, to analyze internal and external datasets, generate actionable scientific evidence, and inform discovery and portfolio decisions.
  • Scientific Collaboration: Communicate assumptions, results, uncertainties, and recommendations effectively; incorporate feedback from CI Leads and partner functions; and contribute constructively to multidisciplinary discussions.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline, with  minimal 2 years of relevant postdoctoral experience, preferably with experience in drug discovery and development within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics and the analysis of large-scale biological datasets, such as single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, and proteomics.
  • Strong understanding of disease biology and mechanisms, preferably in immunology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, and/or dermatology.
  • Experience integrating multiple data types and lines of evidence to assess target biology, MoA, translational relevance, biomarkers, or patient segments.
  • Proficiency in reproducible data analysis and visualization using relevant programming languages and computational environments; experience with machine learning/AI methods for biological data is desirable.
  • Ability to critically evaluate data quality, analytical assumptions, uncertainty, and the limitations of computational evidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex findings into concise, decision-relevant insights and presentations for multidisciplinary drug discovery teams.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently on assigned deliverables while collaborating closely with CI Leads and cross-functional colleagues.

Eligibility Requirements
